Discovering Inner Worlds: Adlerian Play Therapy for Kinship Care Challenges

This workshop focuses on utilizing Adlerian play therapy to understand and support the unique experiences of children in kinship care, addressing their specific challenges while equipping therapists with practical techniques to foster resilience, connection, and emotional expression.

Description

This workshop explores the distinctive experiences and perspectives of children raised in kinship settings through the framework of Adlerian play therapy. Kinship care is a form of childcare where children are raised by relatives or close family friends when their biological parents are unable to care for them, due to various reasons such as illness, substance abuse, incarceration, or other challenges. Kinship care can be formal, where the caregivers are granted legal custody or guardianship, or informal, without legal intervention. It often allows children to retain a sense of identity and belonging within their family network.  The workshop highlights the importance of comprehending a child's lifestyle, social context, and personal experiences. Children in kinship care often encounter specific challenges, such as changes in family dynamics, attachment issues, and identity development, all of which influence their perceptions of themselves, others, and the world around them.  Adlerian play therapy serves as a developmentally appropriate avenue for children to articulate their emotions, process complex feelings, and address unmet needs within a secure therapeutic environment. Utilizing Adlerian play therapy, therapists can reveal a child's lifestyle and gain insights into their perceptions and interactions with their surroundings.  Participants in this workshop will acquire practical Adlerian play therapy techniques, including the identification and encouragement of strengths, the cultivation of social interest, and the reframing of mistaken beliefs. They will learn to unveil play therapy clients’ private logic.  This understanding will empower therapists to customize interventions that foster resilience, connection, and a sense of belonging.
