Learn how to conceptualize and treat the anxious play therapy client – and consult with the anxious parent in this experiential workshop.

Description

This session is designed to help play therapists understand more clearly, and treat more effectively, play therapy clients with anxiety.  The session will include a review of recent stress and anxiety research.  The presenter will provide a review of case studies designed to illustrate the issues related to anxiety (e.g., perfectionism), theoretical conceptualizations of anxious play therapy clients, and a discussion of play therapy treatment strategies.  You will leave with a greater understanding of the nature of anxiety, how to conceptualize the anxious child, and specific play therapy techniques for treatment.

  1. Describe the cognitive, behavioral, and physiological features of anxiety
  2. List and describe the relevant current anxiety research that informs play therapy practice,
  3. Explain how to conceptualize different forms of anxiety from an Adlerian play therapy perspective.
  4. List and describe three play therapy techniques to treat anxiety in play therapy clients.
  5. List and describe two techniques to use in consultation with parents of play therapy clients.
