Executive functioning and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Just as an air traffic control system at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of many aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs a similar skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and manage impulses.
This course is designed to provide a wide-focused view on various areas of executive functioning. We will explore a variety of practical strategies and interventions to implement into your play therapy practice. You will leave this seminar with a set of tools that includes strategies to assess the child’s executive functioning skills, methods to help the child gain insight into his current level of functioning, and skill development through Adlerian play therapy techniques and skills. We will share methods to assess and strengthen elements of executive functioning throughout the 4 phases of Adlerian play therapy. In addition, we consider ways to support teachers and parents of your play therapy clients in developing and improving the following executive functioning skills in child clients:
